Two Miami police officers were transported to a local hospital Thursday morning by other officers after being shot in the city’s Allapattah neighborhood, authorities confirmed.
According to police, the shooting happened around 7:45 a.m. in the area of Northwest 14th Avenue and 26th Street.
“We received a gun detection report at the same location, somewhere in the middle of between 14th and 15th on 26th Street,” Miami Police Chief Manny Morales told reporters at the scene. “Units immediately respond. Upon arrival, they see a vehicle that is riddled with bullets, and immediately they begin to receive shots.”
Police said numerous rounds were fired at officers by at least one person with a high-powered rifle.
A male officer and a female officer were both shot in their legs — one in their knee and one in their ankle, Morales confirmed.
According to police, both officers were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center by other officers. They are both listed in stable condition.
Helicopter and K-9 units responded to the scene after the shooting.
Local 10’s Trent Kelly was in the area as officers detained the driver of a pickup truck who an officer said is believed to be the brother of the suspected gunman.
The man was handcuffed and searched by officers before being placed in the back of a police vehicle.
Police said the suspect is believed to be barricaded inside a home nearby.
“Bear with us and stay indoors, alright?” Morales said. “We want to make sure that we keep the community safe as we let the incident unfold. We’re going to be absolutely taking our time and we are always operating under the rule that we uphold the sanctity of life to the highest extreme.”
