Middle school boy dies, father critically injured after car plunges into Cape Coral lake

2Middle school boy dies, father critically injured after car plunges into Cape Coral lake

A 12-year-old boy has died, and his father is left in critical condition after their vehicle landed in a lake during a crash on Veterans Memorial Parkway in Cape Coral on Tuesday.

According to the Cape Coral Police Department, two vehicles collided, causing one to veer off the road and submerge in a small lake near the road.

The boy, a student at Gulf Middle School, was pulled from the vehicle but did not survive, CCPD said. His father remains hospitalized in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

Dave Dunteman lives near the crash and said he saw the scene.

“I’d like to see more police presence on this road,” Dunteman said. “At 8 or 9 at night, it’s like a speedway. You can hear them. I hear the motorcycles, I hear the cars, and they are flying. So I’m not surprised when it happens.”

Police are continuing to investigate what led to the crash and have not released the names of those involved or details about the other vehicle.
