A man from Missouri is accused of leading a reckless chase through South Florida, during which he collided with two law enforcement vehicles and another car.
The chase began on Tuesday when the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) alerted local agencies that a fleeing Dodge van was linked to an armed carjacking in Pompano Beach.
At around 1:30 PM, an officer from the Highlands Beach Police Department (HBPD) reported that they spotted the stolen van, later discovered to be driven by C M, 34, on South Ocean Boulevard.
The probable cause affidavit states that after the HBPD officer activated their lights to pull him over, M attempted to evade capture by recklessly driving through oncoming traffic and crossing double yellow lines. Because of the reported dangerous driving, the officer broke off the pursuit.
M then made his way into Boca Raton, and officers from the Boca Raton Police Department (BRPD) began to chase him southbound on A1A. During the chase, he allegedly crashed into an unmarked BRPD patrol car but continued to flee without stopping.
BRPD stated that M continued flee to Westbound Northeast Spanish River Boulevard, where an officer attempted to deploy a stop stick to deflate M’s tires, another driver in a nearby Toyota inadvertently ran over the device, causing their tire to go flat. In the chaos, M collided with the rear of the Toyota, resulting in minor injuries to the three passengers inside.
M eventually fled into a warehouse area near North Dixie Highway. After jumping a curb and getting stuck, he reversed into another unmarked BRPD car.
He then exited the stolen vehicle and attempted to escape on foot but was quickly apprehended by police after a brief chase.
Over four separate cases, M has been accused of aggravated battery on specified personnel, three counts of failing to stop at a crash involving injuries, two counts of fleeing officers at a high speed, trespassing, and resisting an officer with violence.
