The Orange County Fire Rescue Department said more than a dozen cats died in a house fire on Spring Run Avenue this morning.

OCFRD said firefighters were called out to the home on the 4900 block of Spring Run Avenue around 6:30 a.m. A woman in the home was able to get out safely, however a number of her cats in the home were said to have died. OCFRD said there were at least a dozen cats in the home.

“We did have heavy smoke and flames coming from the front of the house, it’s always extremely important for us to arrive on scene, and get the fire out fast,” said Orange County Fire Rescue Department Lt. Jason Hollenback.

Parts of the roof had been burned through by flames and scorch marks could be seen on the front of the house.

Joanne Quimbaya lives a couple doors down and said this is a hard day on everyone.

“I don’t know how she got out, but she lost all of her pets, and it’s just really sad, but I’m just grateful she’s alive,” said Quimbaya.

OCFRD says they believe the fire started in the front bedroom, but the State Fire Marshal is investigating the official cause.

Quimbaya said in her close-knit neighborhood they’re hugging their own pets a little closer.

“Anybody that needs anything in this neighborhood, we are always there, and that’s the best part, we are family, not just neighbors,” she said.

OCFRD is reminding everyone to check smoke alarms and have an escape plan—because seconds can save lives.
