A mother and her son were hospitalized Sunday following a fire at their townhome in Pompano Beach, first responders confirmed to Local 10 News.

According to Pompano Beach Fire Rescue officials, the fire started in the kitchen of the home located in the 3100 block of North Palm Aire Drive.

PBFR said firefighters arrived at the scene to find heavy black smoke coming from the townhouse.

According to first responders, the fire started in the kitchen and spread to the living room.

The mother and son were taken to Broward Health North to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters confirmed two adjacent units sustained smoke damage and are uninhabitable.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
