Two people riding a motorcycle were seriously injured after a multiple-vehicle crash on the Southbound Turnpike west of Boca Raton.
Palm Beach County Fire Rescue said that at 5:20 p.m. on Sunday, firefighters responded to the multiple-vehicle crash near the Glades Road exit in Boca Raton.
Officials said that initial reports from several 911 callers were unclear, with some suggesting the crash might also extend into the northbound lanes. To address the situation, both Palm Beach County Fire Rescue and the Broward County Fire Rescue crews responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, responders reported finding a crash involving four vehicles, including three passenger cars and a motorcycle.
According to officials, two people on the motorcycle were ejected after hitting the median and were classified as trauma alerts, indicating serious injuries. All other people involved in the crash reported no injuries and declined transportation to the hospital.
Due to the severity of the motorcycle crash, the Trauma Hawk helicopter was initially launched to assist with patient care. However, once the trauma patients were stabilized, responders saw that northbound traffic was stopped, allowing for quicker ground transport.
Ultimately, both patients were transported by ground units to a Palm Beach County Trauma Center, and the helicopter was canceled.
The Florida Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the accident.
