Motorcyclist dead after Sarasota crash; police investigating

 Police are investigating after a motorcycle rider was killed in a crash Sunday afternoon.

According to the Sarasota Police Department, the incident occurred near the intersection of Gulfstream Avenue and Bayfront Drive around 2:30 p.m.

Police believe a motorcycle tried to pass a vehicle while exiting the traffic circle southbound onto Bayfront Drive and hit the vehicle before crashing into a pole.

Police said the motorcycle then entered the roadway, causing a second motorcyclist to crash.

The first motorcyclist was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Both the driver of the vehicle and the second motorcycle driver cooperated with officers and are not facing any charges.

Crews diverted traffic around Gulfstream Avenue and Bayfront Drive for several hours during the investigation. The lanes have since been reopened.
