Motorcyclist dies after being rear-ended in Lake County, troopers say

A 39-year-old Davenport woman riding a motorcycle in Lake County died after being rear-ended by a sedan late Saturday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 11:22 p.m. on northbound U.S. 27, approaching Sawgrass Bay Boulevard, troopers said.

According to an FHP crash report, the motorcyclist was traveling north in the center lane ahead of a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis. The driver of the Mercury failed to observe the motorcycle ahead, striking it as a result, the report states.

A 2023 Tesla Model Y traveling north behind both of the other vehicles was unable to avoid the wreck and thus struck the rear of the Mercury, according to FHP.

The motorcyclist was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, the report states. Troopers believe she was wearing a helmet during the crash.

Neither the 78-year-old Clermont man driving the Mercury, the 48-year-old Clermont man driving the Tesla nor any of their passengers were injured in the crash, the report states, adding they were all wearing seat belts and remained on scene.

FHP is still investigating.
