My son wasn’t protected:’ Mother has questions after son assaulted at school

A Suncoast mother is asking questions and seeking justice after she says her son was attacked at school.

JP’ son was enrolled at Electa Lee Magnet Middle School in Bradenton when another student picked up her son and body slammed him onto the ground. The violent altercation involving the student was caught on camera.

“My son wasn’t protected,” P said, watching the video of her 11-year-old son C walking through the hallway was he was picked up and violently tossed to the ground.

P says her son was a transfer through the Hope Scholarship Program after another incident at a different school. This happened, she said, on his fourth day at the school.

The Hope Scholarship Program is available to any public school student in Florida who is a victim of bullying.

The mother took the situation to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office. School Resource Officers told deputies he spoke to the other student and he told the SRO that Cason had called him an expletive.

Manatee County Schools could not give specifics as to whether or not the other students was punished or what that might have entailed but they sent a statement to ABC7.

The statement read: “The student behavior shown in the brief video is unacceptable. School employees swiftly responded to this incident and followed protocols related to first aid, parent notification, and investigation. School discipline consequences have been imposed in accordance with the District’s Code of Student Conduct, which establishes high standards for student behavior and imposes significant consequences for disruptive conduct.”

KC, the Chief of Staff at Manatee County Schools, says the school is doubling resources to fight bullying.

“Really in those middle school grades, we’ve really put a heavy emphasis on that this year, training our staff with some extra resources, also providing resources to our parents,” C told ABC7.

In the meantime, P says her son is in a knee brace and he’s expressed suicidal ideation.

The district has offered P insurance paperwork for her child’s injury and another Hope Scholarship, but she wonders if her son is safe anywhere.

“I feel like they’re just handing me another document just to transfer him to another school where this could potentially happen and occur again,” P pondered.

P says she is pressing charges and still deciding where her son will go to school next.

Data on the Florida Department of Education’s Website states that the number of physical attacks increased by 77% from the 2018-2019 school year through the end of the 2022 school year.
