ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — A 37-year-old Pensacola man is seriously injured after crashing into Bayou Chico Creek and becoming trapped in a submerged vehicle in Escambia County on Sunday night.
The incident occurred at 9 p.m. near the intersection of US 98 (SR 30) and SR 295, Navy Boulevard.
The man was traveling east in the westbound lanes of US 98 at a high rate of speed in a white Mercedes sedan, according to FHP.
Troopers say the vehicle ran a red light, traveled through the Murphy’s Express parking lot, struck a concrete parking bollard, went through a chain-link fence, and onto the SW Greenway boardwalk before crashing into Bayou Chico Creek.
The vehicle was completely submerged, according to FHP.
Troopers say two Navy sailors assigned to Naval Aviation Schools Command aboard Naval Air Station Pensacola witnessed the crash and immediately rendered aid.
One of the sailors jumped from the boardwalk into the water, heard the driver knocking on the windows, and broke through the sunroof to pull the driver from the submerged vehicle, according to FHP.
Troopers say the sailor pulled the driver to shore, where the second sailor pulled him ashore and began rendering first aid until Escambia County EMS arrived.
The first sailor then swam back to the car and reentered it to ensure no one else was inside. He was treated at a local hospital for injuries sustained during the rescue, according to FHP.
