The sound is unmistakable: screeching tires, a loud crash, and then silence.
Early Wednesday morning, a car flew down Cape Coral Parkway West and slammed into a palm tree at the road’s dead end, marking the fifth crash at that location since 2021.
For neighbors like Bob McKewen, who lives just off the road on SW 29th Avenue, it’s a pattern that’s become deeply unsettling.
“That’s the last thing that goes into my brain as I put my head on the pillow,” McKewen said. “Is tonight going to be another accident?”
Out of fear, he’s started parking his two-ton Mercedes in front of his garage — using it as a makeshift barrier to protect his home.
The city has responded to complaints by installing signs and rumble strips, but residents say it’s not enough. Since 2021, four of the crashes have involved DUI drivers.
After the latest crash, Councilwoman Laurie Lehmann came out Thursday to see the danger to nearby homes firsthand. Gulf Coast was there as McKewen walked her through the end of the road and showed the years’ worth of damage left behind.
“I never expected to find this,” she said. “This is a horror story.”
Lehmann says she plans to bring department heads out for a full review of the area and push for immediate changes.
“We’re going to do a drive-along,” she said. “We need to get this fixed.”
In the meantime, families living near the dead end remain on edge. They say they don’t have time to wait anymore, and they hope the city steps in and makes some changes soon.
