New York Man Arrested in Clearwater, Video Taping Florida Tourist in Beach Bathroom

Clearwater Police officers arrested a New York man Sunday afternoon on a charge of video voyeurism after an incident in a public bathroom.

Gabriel Mejias, 29, of New Windsor, N.Y., was taken into custody after the 1:38 p.m. incident, which occurred in the 400 block of South Gulfview Blvd.

According to police, a 25-year-old female tourist from South Florida told officers she was changing in one of the bathrooms/dressing rooms at that location when she saw a cell phone recording her from the next stall.

The phone was being held under the divider that separates the two sides.

Police say the woman ran out and confronted Mejias, who was trying to get away.

Police say the victim and a friend convinced the man to delete the video before police arrived on the scene.

Mejias admitted to officers that he videotaped her, and he surrendered his phone as evidence to be searched.

Mejias was booked into the Pinellas County Jail.
