North Port woman charged with hitting pedestrian, leaving the scene

A North Port woman is facing hit-and-run charges after police say she hit and seriously injured a pedestrian April 12.

According to a probable cause affidavit, shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday, North Port police were called to Price Boulevard, near Purdue Street, after a 911 call reporting a crash.

When police arrived, they discovered a man was struck by a vehicle while trying to cross the road. He was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Investigators found pieces of a vehicle’s side-view mirror near the crash site. The witness told officers they were driving east on Price Boulevard when they saw the victim laying in the road, the affidavit said.

Police were able to find video showing a light-colored SUV in the area near the time of the crash and were able to trace the SUV’s license tag to the owner, identified as Kathy Dove, 59, of North Port.

Officers went to Dove’s address to discover a yellow Hummer in the driveway with a missing side-view mirror and other damage to the SUV’s fender and corner light.

Officers spoke to Dove, who said Dove told them she was driving the Hummer at the time of the crash. The affidavit also stated that Dove said “she knew she hit something but thought it was a traffic cone,” and did not stop or try to call police.

Dove was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash with great bodily injury or death. She has since bonded out of jail, jail records show.
