A man has been arrested after deputies say he attacked a nurse at HCA Palms West hospital in Loxahatchee on Tuesday.
According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO), Stephen Scantlebury, 33, who was a patient at the hospital, faces charges of attempted murder.
At around 1:20 p.m., deputies were dispatched to an aggravated battery incident in a third-floor patient room. When they arrived, deputies learned Scantlebury had brutally attacked the nurse.
Cellphone video obtained by CBS12 News shows the suspect walking outside in the middle of Southern Boulevard, away from the scene before he was taken into custody.
“In the video, you see a bunch of nurse running towards him too, so I’m like what’s going on?” said Logan Ashman, who recorded the video. “It is not something you see everyday.”
The female nurse was rushed to St. Mary’s Medical Center Trauma Center in West Palm Beach for her critical injuries.
The suspect is currently undergoing medical clearance and will be booked on an attempted murder count, a PBSO spokesperson said.
In a statement from HCA Florida Healthcare, it said their primary concern is for the nurse and the hospital is praying for her recovery.
“We are also providing support to our hospital staff who are understandably shaken by this incident. The attack on our nursing colleague happened within a matter of seconds and was witnessed by multiple people who came to assist. We are grateful to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office who acted to detain the suspect and we are assisting law enforcement in their investigation,” HCA Florida Healthcare said in its statement.
