Officer hospitalized after violent struggle with Lantana bike theft suspect

A bike theft call in Lantana turned violent Friday when a handcuffed suspect attacked and dragged an officer, sending her to the hospital.

Around noon, the Lantana Police Department (LPD) was called to a McDonald’s on the 1500 block of W Lantana Road for reports of a bicycle theft.

Officers reported observing two suspicious men, one later identified as 32-year-old MC, in a white SUV with a shiny red bicycle lying across the trunk.

When officers questioned the C friend, he said that Crumrine’s friend “Tay” bought the bike at Publix.

Halfway through questioning, a backup call alerted the officer to assist another officer attempting to detain C.

The officer sprinted to the location where C, already in handcuffs, was pushing and pulling away from the arresting officer.

According to the arresting officer, C attacked her while a large crowd formed and was yelling at C to stop.

The officer said she was dizzy, couldn’t stand, had knee pain, and a softball-sized welt on her forehead.

The officer was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital for her injuries, according to LPD.

Surveillance video shows C dragging the officer across the pavement, with both the officer and the suspect hitting the ground several times while C kicks the officer.

C was subsequently booked on counts of battery on an officer, resisting with violence, possession of cocaine, resisting with violence, and possession of paraphernalia.
