Three officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office shot a man who police said pointed a rifle at them before he barricaded himself inside an Arlington home for about three hours Monday night, officials said.
According to JSO, around 8:40 p.m., police received a call from neighbors regarding shots fired on Creeks Ridge Road off Saint Johns Bluff Road.
Police said when neighbors walked outside to see what happened, they saw a man in a garage holding a rifle.
When officers arrived and approached the house, they saw the suspect and told him to drop the rifle.
According to JSO, the suspect followed the orders and was taken into custody.
As officers were taking the suspect into custody, his father, identified as 68-year-old OM picked up the rifle that his son had been holding and pointed it at the officers, police said.
That’s when three officers shot at M, who then went back into the house.
The SWAT team was called to the scene, and a three-hour standoff took place, JSO said.
After the SWAT team gassed the home, M came out and was taken into custody.
M, who had a gunshot wound from the earlier encounter with officers, received medical care at the scene before he was transported to the hospital, according to JSO.
It’s unclear where M was shot. His condition was also unknown as of early Tuesday.
JSO said the officers who fired the shots at M are Officer M. Ross, who has been working with JSO for three years, and Officer Q. Kincaid and Officer G. Hernandez, who have both been with JSO for six years.
This was Ross’s and Hernandez’s second officer-involved shooting and the first one for Kincaid, JSO said.
This was the second officer-involved shooting so far this year for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, and also the second on the same night.
Just minutes earlier, two JSO officers shot and killed a man after he pulled a gun while he was being questioned in the Bartram Park area near the Duval-St. Johns County line.
The State Attorney’s Office is investigating both officer-involved shootings.
Once the investigations are complete, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own investigation.
