One dead in jet ski crash near Captiva Pass

Florida Fish and Wildlife said one person is dead after a jet ski crash near Captiva Pass in Lee County.

On Saturday, FWC along with multiple other agencies, responded to the scene of a two-vessel incident.

FWC said a jet ski with two 17-year-olds and a 28-foot vessel with four people were traveling in the channel in Pine Island Sound near Captiva Pass when a collision happened.

The people on the 28-foot vessel were uninjured.

Beachgoers like Ellen Richards who are out on the water often said it could have been worse for the four people on the boat.

“It just brought back memories of us being over by Fort Myers on our boat and having to take a sharp turn, because here comes the jet skiers, and they’re coming right at you, and they’re not paying attention to what they’re doing,” Richards said.

One of the teens on the jet ski was airlifted to a nearby hospital, while the second teen sadly died as a result of the collision.

FWC officials tell Gulf Coast News the teen who was airlifted is recovering in the hospital.

Parents on the beach said the accident makes them think twice about the safety of their kids on the water.

“We wanted a jet ski. We wanted to get one for our 16 year olds, and it makes me question whether that’s safe,” said mom Cena Clark. “It was very heart wrenching to hear that.”

FWC is the lead agency in this active investigation.
