At approximately 3 a.m. Sunday, Lee County deputies responded to a shooting in the 600 block of Jackson Avenue in Lehigh Acres. One victim was hurt but is expected to survive.
An additional scene related to the incident was located in the 200 block of Joel Boulevard, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
Neighbors initially mistook the sounds for fireworks until they heard three loud bangs.
“I got woken up by three round bursts of gunshots, and then one loud burst after, so probably two different weapons,” said Ronald Bach, a Lehigh Acres resident.
Bach noted that hearing gunshots is not unusual in the area.
“Yeah, I hear shootings often. I just assume it’s hunters. Or maybe it’s a car backfiring or something, but this was definitely a lot louder than what I’ve heard before,” he said.
Security footage showed a person hopping on one leg before more gunfire erupted, causing the individual to fall. The person was later picked up by a car that sped away. Deputies searched the area until the early morning hours.
“Two vehicles and maybe four police officers. They were combing the area. They switched the caution sign. First, it was really close to my house, and then they slowly got closer toward the intersection,” Bach said.
While canvassing the area, car keys were found, and neighbors discovered more evidence across the street. Jack, who recently moved to Lehigh Acres, expressed disbelief at the situation.
“I couldn’t believe it, you know? They must have threw that stuff out. So I was looking for shell casings. I couldn’t find shell casings or anything like that,” he said.
Detectives with the violent crimes unit have taken over the investigation.
Both scenes remain active as detectives work to gather information.
