One injured, woman arrested after knife attack at homeless camp in Port Charlotte

A woman was arrested, and a man was injured, on Sunday after deputies say an argument escalated into a knife attack at a homeless camp in Port Charlotte.

According to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called shortly after noon to the area of Kenesaw Street and Cedarwood Street after reports of a physical fight involving injuries. When deputies arrived, they said they found a man bleeding heavily from his left forearm.

Deputies saw a cut on the man’s arm that was about three inches long and roughly half an inch deep. A deputy applied a tourniquet to help control the bleeding until emergency medical crews arrived and took over treatment, CCSO said.

Before being taken to the hospital, the man told deputies the woman who cut him was SH, 40. He said the two argued after H came to his campsite and he told her he did not want her there. The man claims H then picked up a knife and sliced his arm.

Deputies found H outside her tent at the campsite, about 100 feet from where the incident happened. As she was escorted from the wooded area to the roadway, the man, who was inside an ambulance, identified her as the person who cut him, authorities said.

Sheriff Bill Prummell said tensions can be higher this time of year but violence is never justified.

“Arguments happen, but how you handle those moments is part of what defines you,” Prummell said in a statement.

H was arrested on a charge of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm. She was being held without bond on Monday at the Charlotte County Jail.
