The Leesburg Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire Thursday afternoon at approximately 3:47 p.m. at 211 S. Nursery Road.
The initial emergency call reported multiple explosions heard by a nearby neighbor. While responding to the incident, Battalion Chief Ricketson reported seeing smoke from the area of Main Street.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the residence approximately 25 percent involved in fire. Bystanders reported that there may be an occupant inside the home.
Engine 61 was assigned to fire suppression operations, while Engine 62 conducted a search of the residence. Firefighters located an adult male victim inside a bathroom. The victim was removed from the residence through a rear window and transported to UF Health Leesburg Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Four dogs were also located inside the residence. The dogs were found deceased in kennels. Firefighters removed the animals from the home and attempted lifesaving measures, including CPR and supplemental oxygen, but were unsuccessful.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office was requested to assist with the investigation, which is ongoing.
