Orange City man riding electric bicycle dies in crash with car driving in wrong direction

An Orange City man riding an electric-powered bicycle was killed in a head-on collision with a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction, police said.

The crash occurred at 8:29 p.m. in the area of East Graves Avenue and Raintree Drive, according to Orange City police.

The rider of the bicycle was identified as Joel Acevedo, 35, who died at the scene of the crash. The driver of the car that struck him was identified as Robert David Halpern, 81. He was taken to Advent Health Fish Memorial Hospital in Orange City for evaluation.

The electric bicycle was traveling west on East Graves Avenue in the westbound lane when it was struck head-on by the 2016, four-door Hyundai, driven by Halpern, which was eastbound.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information on the accident is asked to contact traffic homicide investigators Sgt. Brian Kibbe or Officer Joshua Hoffman at 386-775-9999.
