Orlando woman killed, man injured when car rear-ends moped on SR-50 in Christmas, troopers say

A 42-year-old Orlando woman was killed and a 44-year-old Christmas man was critically injured late Wednesday when their moped was struck from behind in Orange County by a car driven by a 19-year-old woman, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The fatal crash happened around 11 p.m. on State Road 50 (Colonial Drive) near Taylor Creek Road in Christmas.

The FHP said the 19-year-old was driving a 2023 Kia K5 west on S.R. 50 and failed to slow down, colliding with the back of the moped, which was traveling in front of her.

The man, who was driving the moped, and his passenger were thrown into the median of the road after impact, an FHP crash report stated.

Troopers said the Kia ran off the road after the collision and crashed into some shrubs and trees.

The moped passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the FHP.

The moped driver was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center with critical injuries, the FHP said.

The 19-year-old driver of the Kia was taken to AdventHealth Waterford Lakes ER with minor injuries, according to the crash report.
