Passenger killed, driver seriously injured after truck leaves road, strikes tree in Lake County

A passenger in a pickup truck was killed and the driver seriously injured after the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree in Lake County on Monday afternoon, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the one-vehicle crash happened at Lake Erie Road and Bay Lake Road around 5:21 p.m.

According to a crash report, a Ford F-350 was traveling west on Lake Erie Road, east of Bay Lake Road.

Troopers said the driver ran failed to maintain their lane while negotiating a left-hand curve. As a result, the truck ran off of the roadway right and struck a tree.

The passenger, identified as a 27-year-old Mascotte man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, identified as a 31-year-old Leesburg man, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
