Patient allegedly punches nurse over water

Patient allegedly punches nurse over water

A 20-year-old man was arrested for battery on hospital personnel after allegedly assaulting a nurse at a local facility on Monday.

The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office (IRCSO) said at around 7:25 p.m. deputies responded to a disturbance call. The victim, a nurse at the facility, reported that he was making his rounds when BS, a patient, punched him in the back of the neck unprovoked.

“I did observe slight irritation to the back of [the victim’s] neck,” the responding deputy wrote in the arrest report. The victim sought treatment following the attack.

A security officer at the facility, confirmed the nurse’s account, stating he witnessed the incident on camera, according to the arrest affidavit.

Before speaking with S, the deputy consulted with several security officers and health staff familiar with him. They advised that S’s mental faculties were not impaired enough that he was unaware of his actions.

In a post-Miranda statement, S mumbled, making it difficult to gather clear information, the arresting deputy wrote. However, the deputy said Sanchez mumbled that he might have attacked the victim because he needed water.

Based on the interviews, IRCSO said S was booked into the Indian River County Jail for battery on hospital personnel.

S’s arrest comes after nurses in Palm Beach County have come together to show solidarity toward a 67-year-old nurse who was brutally beaten by patient.
