Pedestrian hit, killed by car while crossing street on Christmas Eve: Lakeland PD

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a car while reportedly trying to cross the street on the night of Christmas Eve.

The crash happened around 7:39 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 24 near a shopping center on East Edgewood Drive in Lakeland, according to the Lakeland Police Department.

Witnesses told investigators that the 69-year-old man had been trying to cross the street in a southerly direction when he walked into the path of a 2015 BMW that was traveling east.

Evidence gathered at the scene appeared to back up witness statements, police said.

The man, identified as W C, was taken to Lakeland Regional Hospital, where officials said he later succumbed to his injuries, “despite the best efforts of medical professionals.”

Authorities said the driver of the BMW stopped and waited for first responders after the crash.

Members of the police department’s Traffic Homicide Unit responded to the scene and took over the crash.

The roadway was shut down for around two hours while the scene was processed. As of Wednesday, the investigation was ongoing.
