Pedestrian hit, killed in crash on US 19

A pedestrian died after an SUV crashed into him on U.S. Highway 19 earlier Tuesday morning, according to the Tarpon Springs Police Department.

The crash happened in the southbound lanes of U.S. 19 south of Beckett Way. As of this writing, the highway is shut down to traffic for an investigation.

Police say the man, who has not yet been identified, died at the scene of the crash. The driver behind the wheel of the SUV, a 21-year-old woman, was not hurt, the department added in a statement.

Officials ask anyone who might have witnessed the crash to contact the police department at 727-938-2849.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area.
