The Ormond Beach Police Department is investigating a fatal traffic accident from Saturday, just before 11 p.m.
The crash happened at the intersection of South Orchard Street and Division Avenue.
According to a release from OBPD, two pedestrians were traveling on Division Avenue when a 79-year-old driver, traveling at high speeds, failed to stop at a stop sign and struck one of the pedestrians.
The pedestrian victim sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim’s identity has not yet been released.
The driver was not injured but was transported to a nearby hospital out of precaution after showing symptoms consistent with dementia, OBPD said.
“This is a tragic loss of life and a difficult reminder how quickly lives can change on our roadways,” said OBPD Capt. Chris Roos. “We strongly urge drivers to obey posted speed limits, remain alert and use extra caution at night, especially when visibility is low and pedestrians are difficult to spot.”
This investigation remains ongoing.
