ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — A 67-year-old Pensacola man is charged with tying two girls to a chair and beating them with a switch and a belt for getting in trouble at school, according to an arrest report.
Ray Benjamin was arrested on April 16 on domestic violence charges of:
- aggravated child abuse (two counts)
- false imprisonment (two counts)
He was released from Escambia County Jail the next day on $100,000 bond.
The incident happened last Wednesday around 1 p.m.
According to the report, the two girls both got suspended from school that day, so the school called Benjamin to pick them up and take them home.
The report states that once at home, Benjamin tied them each to chairs with plastic wrap so they couldn’t leave. He then reportedly started hitting them on the feet and lower leg area with a switch (small stick).
When the switch broke, he started hitting them with his leather belt, according to the report.
The report states one girl was able to get free of the plastic wrap and run from the home. Benjamin gave chase, which is when the other girl also freed herself and escaped the home, according to the report.
The report states the girls eventually met up and ran to the first business they could to ask for help.
According to the report, deputies were called to a business on E 9 Mile Road for a child abuse complaint, which is when the girls told them what happened. Both girls were then transported to the hospital with injuries, including welts and scratches on their legs and feet.
The report states deputies located and spoke with Benjamin, who admitted to the allegations. He told deputies he was punishing the girls for getting in trouble at school.
