Pickup collision with semi kills 1, injures 1 near Cross City

A Cross City woman died and a Cross City man was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon when a tractor-trailer pulled out in front of their pickup on State Road 55 in Dixie County.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) release, the 77-year-old Cross City man was driving his pickup northbound on SR 55 at 4:05 p.m. when a 38-year-old Alberta, Alabama man driving a semi pulling a flatbed trailer stopped at a stop sign on NE 132nd Avenue and then pulled out in front of the pickup, attempting to cross the northbound lane in the pickup’s right of way.

The front of the pickup collided with the left side of the trailer and both occupants sustained serious injuries. Dixie County Fire Rescue, with assistance from the Dixie County Sheriff’s Department, were on scene. Emergency responders transported the two Cross City people to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville where the female passenger was pronounced.
