A Plantation High School student was hospitalized on Monday after he was shot near the school, Broward School Board officials said.
According to Plantation Police, officers responded to the area of Northwest 70th Avenue and 16th Street after receiving reports of a shooting.
Police said the incident appeared to have started with a fight involving two juveniles that ended with one of them being shot.
The juvenile who was shot was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Cell phone video showed the student who was shot being placed on a gurney and then into an ambulance. He appeared to be alert as he could be seen on his phone while going into the ambulance.
“It looked like a fight broke out at the corner right here at the four-way stop, couple shots rang out,” one witness said. “Looked like a kid got shot then the shooter ran down the street and all the kids, it turned into chaos at that point.”
Ring camera footage shows several children running and screaming after gunshots were heard being fired.
Police said the shooting happened off-campus and after school hours, and that officers were working to identify a suspect.
