Police chase van stolen from Miami hospital; suspect in custody following crash in Coral Gables

The driver of a stolen van was taken into custody after a police chase ended in a crash in Coral Gables.

It happened Tuesday night near the intersection of Le Jeune Road and University Drive.

According to police, officers were alerted to a van that had been stolen from HCA Florida Mercy Hospital in Miami.

“Around 9 p.m. tonight, our units got a BOLO for a stolen vehicle out of the city of Miami. The vehicle was a stolen van, stolen in the city of Miami’s jurisdiction,” Coral Gables police Sgt. Michelle Christensen said. “Our Crime Suppression team noticed the vehicle here in our area (and) attempted to stop it.”

According to Christensen, Coral Gables police officers pursued the vehicle for a short distance until a crash that involved an officer, the van and a third vehicle, police said.

First responders took the suspect to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The officer and civilian involved in the crash were not injured.

The suspect’s identity has not yet been released.
