Police help resident escape burning duplex through window

St. Petersburg police help a victim escape through a window during a duplex fire.

Crews with St. Petersburg Fire Rescue (SPFR) responded to the structure fire at a one-story duplex about 9:30 a.m. Upon arrival, firefighters reported heavy smoke and flames coming from the building.

Before firefighters reached the scene, police officers assisted one occupant out of the duplex through a window.

All four adult residents were evacuated, SPFR said.

Firefighters launched an aggressive interior attack and prevented the flames from spreading to a nearby home. Two people were taken to a hospital for further evaluation.

Crews remained at the scene to complete overhaul operations.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
