A man is accused of raping a woman he met at Paddywagon Irish Pub in Port Charlotte on Friday.
JR is being held in the Charlotte County Jail without bond until his trial. He is facing a first-degree sexual battery and battery by strangulation charge. The court said he will stay in jail until his trial, with no bond, because this was a “dangerous crime.”
R’s arrest affidavit says he met a woman at Paddywagon Irish Pub, took her home and started choking and raped her while she was unconscious.
The suspect reportedly got on top of the victim, choking her, and picked her up by the neck, tossing her around the room. The victim blacked out because she couldn’t breathe and texted her friend “emergency,” but he did not respond. The next thing she remembers is waking up to the suspect on top of her, choking her to the point where she could barely breathe. She yelled at him to stop and then went unconscious. She woke up naked with the man beside her, also naked, and her underwear was torn and shredded.
An affidavit said the woman had bruises on her neck and chin from choking, bruises on her legs, and soreness in her vaginal area. She reported the incident two days later, stating that the suspect had been sending her messages on Snapchat, trying to apologize, and told her to get Plan B. The Major Crimes Unit investigated, executing a search warrant at the suspect’s house and seizing bedsheets and the torn underwear as evidence.
The court said R will stay in jail until his trial, with no bond because this was a “dangerous crime.” The suspect told detectives that sometimes alcohol makes him violent, he doesn’t know why he choked and had sex with her, and said he is remorseful and that’s not his nature. He was taken into custody with Plan B in his pocket and pleaded not guilty.
