A 56-year-old Port Charlotte man died Friday night in a crash on Veterans Boulevard near Wylam Drive, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened when the man, driving a Toyota Sienna minivan westbound in the right lane of Veterans Boulevard, abruptly veered left for unknown reasons.

His vehicle crossed the grass median and entered the eastbound lanes, sideswiping a Honda Passport SUV and a guardrail.

After the initial collision, the minivan veered back into the westbound lanes, crossed over the eastbound lanes again, and collided a second time with the guardrail.

The driver of the Honda Passport, a 39-year-old man from Punta Gorda, and his 1-year-old passenger, who was in a rear-facing child restraint, were not injured.

The driver of the Toyota Sienna was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
