Firefighters battled flames Thursday afternoon after a vehicle and golf cart caught fire, reportedly causing a powerline to fall in St. James City.
According to the Matlacha Pine Island Fire District, at around 5:15 p.m., crews responded to the scene off Coconut Drive. Firefighters found an empty vehicle and golf cart fully engulfed in flames.
Officials say the fire caused an overhead powerline to break and fall across the road. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office temporarily shut down the road.
Crews were able to quickly extinguish the flames. The nearby home suffered damage from the heat.
LCEC arrived on scene and removed the downed power line. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
