A Lyft driver was arrested after choking and threatening to kill the victim in his backseat, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office announced.
Deputies began an investigation on Oct. 8, 2025, after a woman reported being victimized after being picked up by her Lyft driver.
While taking the woman to her destination, the driver, JMV, 27, pulled the vehicle into a grassy area and placed it in park before entering the backseat.
While in the backseat, MV battered the victim by choking her and threatening to kill her, according to deputies.
The victim was able to convince MV to stop, which allowed her to get out of the car.
“This victim simply wanted to get home safely, and instead, she was met with violence and fear for her life. This kind of predatory behavior will not be ignored,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “I commend the victim for coming forward. Her courage may have stopped this suspect from harming someone else. Predators who target innocent people have no place in our community.”
During the investigation, Lyft records revealed two prior complaints of inappropriate conduct involving MV during previous Lyft services. Those incidents are now under investigation, HCSO said.
MV was arrested on Jan. 29 and charged with battery by strangulation and false imprisonment.
