Punta Gorda woman critically injured after SUV collided with bicycle

 61-year-old Punta Gorda woman was injured while riding a bike after an SUV crashed into her at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Hancock Avenue.

The crash happened around 3:31 p.m. Monday. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the 77-year-old Punta Gorda man driving the SUV was waiting to make a right turn at the intersection.

The woman was riding a bicycle on Hancock Avenue and crossing the travel lanes of U.S. 41 on the crosswalk.

FHP troopers said the SUV driver failed to yield to the bicyclist, made a right turn and collided with the woman.

According to the report, she suffered critical injuries and was transported to an area hospital.

The FHP said the crash remains under investigation.
