A garbage truck fire erupted in Port St. Lucie on Wednesday, prompting a firefighting response after the driver’s desperate attempt to contain the blaze was thwarted by a malfunctioning rear gate.
The St. Lucie County Fire District said that crews responded to the garbage truck fire on Wednesday near the intersection of Selvitz Road and St. James Drive in Port St. Lucie.
It was reported that upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the garbage truck’s load was on fire.
Officials said that the driver had attempted to dump the burning load to prevent the flames from spreading, but the rear gate of the truck malfunctioned and wouldn’t open.
With help from a tow truck, it was reported that firefighters managed to lift the rear gate, enabling them to remove the burning debris.
The fire was brought under control, ensuring that no further damage was done to the truck or the surrounding area.
