The American Red Cross responded to the fire at Legacy on the Bay Apartments in Destin that occurred overnight.
According to an American Red Cross representative, they were told about the apartment fire around 3 a.m. on October 31st. They were informed that the fire had forced the evacuation of an entire building in the complex.
The American Red Cross said the building that caught on fire had 36 units, and although multiple fire departments responded to the scene, all 36 units were destroyed, and two pets passed away.
We’re told eight Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers were sent to the scene. They stayed for several hours to help displaced residents, according to an American Red Cross representative.
The Red Cross says as of Friday afternoon, they have provided emergency relief supplies and financial assistance for immediate needs to 15 households (20 people) who were present.
Apartment management reported an estimated 48 people, and 13 surviving pets were displaced.
The Red Cross says it will work with apartment management and return to the property again to meet with residents who were dispersed or weren’t home when the fire happened.
Residents can also call 1-800-RED-CROSS to open a case virtually.
