A witness says she saw a bicyclist moments before they were hit by a gray sedan, which resulted in significant damage to the car’s windshield and left the bicycle crushed. Photos from the scene in Lehigh Acres also showed a pair of shoes left in the middle of the street after the accident.
Residents along the street have expressed their concerns about the safety of the roads.
“A lot of things happen here on Fourth Street and the avenue right nearby. It’s a very, very busy street. You can see how fast the cars go by here,” said resident Deisy Rivera.
The accident blocked off the southbound lanes of Sunshine Boulevard earlier in the afternoon, and both the car and the bicycle were towed away.
Residents like Rivera are calling for changes to improve safety.
“I think it’s due to the speed at which people are driving around here. I mean, not just in the neighborhood, but also on the street,” Rivera said.
Rivera emphasized the need for speed bumps and increased vigilance from authorities.
“I have a little dog and a young girl, and I would like to ask the authorities to install at least two speed bumps,” Rivera said.
She further highlighted the frequency of accidents in the area, citing that many of them have been fatal.
The Florida Highway Patrol has been contacted for more information as the investigation continues.
