A Riviera Beach police officer is being praised for his quick action after spotting a truck on fire outside a home Sunday morning and helping save a sleeping family inside.
Body camera video obtained by CBS12 News shows Officer Andrew Hinds rushing toward the flames just after 10 a.m. on West 26th Court, where a white pickup truck was fully engulfed.
“We were doing traffic patrol and looked up and saw smoke coming from a house,” Hinds said. “When we got closer, we saw it was the vehicle that was on fire in front of the house.”
Hinds’ body cam captures him running up to the door, banging on the glass, and yelling for the family to get out as thick smoke filled the air.
“Residents were flagging us down, telling us there’s people inside, some small kids and a family,” he said. “We kept on knocking until we got on the glass and knocked on the glass. Then finally the male half opened the door, he was still sleeping.”
Inside were two adults and two small children, unaware their car was burning just feet from the house.
“They didn’t even know anything was happening,” Hinds said. “It would’ve been really bad if we didn’t wake them up and get them out.”
Firefighters arrived within moments and put out the flames before they reached the house. The truck was destroyed, but everyone made it out safely.
“Honestly, I’m just relieved that everybody got out and it didn’t spread anymore,” Hinds said. “The fire department was able to respond and help us out.”
Police believe the fire may have started from an electrical issue with the truck’s battery.
