Road rage incident on US-41 in Lee County leads to man facing hit-and-run charge

Road rage incident on US-41 in Lee County leads to man facing hit-and-run charge

A road rage incident Sunday evening along US-41 in Lee County resulted in a collision and a hit-and-run charge that Dilon Onesti, 27, is facing, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

The arrest report states that Onesti reportedly aggressively drove behind a car with two people inside, hitting the back end of the vehicle and during the collision, he moved over and sideswiped the car.

According to the arrest report, the victim said that after the initial collision, Onesti got out of his truck wearing a ski mask, reportedly removed his license plate, and then drove away.

“It’s definitely something you have to be aware of. If somebody is acting like an idiot, slow down, let them be an idiot in front of me rather than behind me,” Tyler Haas of San Carlos Park said.

Haas, who drives 60 to 150 miles daily, said incidents like this don’t surprise him.

“I would guess that person has some mental issues that go above and beyond just being a bad driver,” Haas said.

The victim followed Onesti after the collision until the truck stopped near the intersection of US-41 and Pine Road.

The victim said he and his girlfriend are fine, but a few hours after the crash, he passed out and woke up in the hospital with head injuries.

“I don’t see why another person would jeopardize another human being like that,” Mark Szmigel of Estero said.

Onesti is facing a hit-and-run charge.
