A Royal Caribbean crew member was found dead after police said he stabbed a fellow worker and then jumped off the ship.
Officials with the Royal Bahamas Police Force told NBC affiliate WTVJ that the incident happened Thursday night as the Icon of the Seas was near San Salvador Island.
Authorities said a 35-year-old South African crew member stabbed his co-worker, a 28-year-old South African woman, multiple times. She is now recovering.
Moments later, police said the man fled by jumping off the ship and into the water. He was later found unresponsive and pronounced dead by onboard medical staff.
A Royal Caribbean spokesperson confirmed the incident to WTVJ in a statement:
“Our onboard security team responded to an incident involving two crew members in a personal dispute. One of the crew members was injured, was attended to by the onboard medical team, and she is now in stable condition,” the statement read. “Unfortunately, the other crew member is deceased after he went overboard and was recovered in a search and rescue operation.”
Icon of the Seas returned to Port Miami on Saturday morning.
