Firefighters are reminding residents of e-bike safety after responding to a fire caused by an e-bike battery.
According to the San Carlos Park Fire Protection and Rescue Service District, firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire on the 3800 block of Unique Circle around 6:30 a.m. Friday.
When the firefighters arrived at the scene, they found an already-extinguished fire that had been caused by an e-bike battery. The crews used a thermal imaging camera to confirm the fire had been fully extinguished and not extended, and proceeded to ventilate smoke from the home, SCPFD said.
SCPFD is reminding residents of ways to reduce the risk of fires involving e-bikes and e-scooters. These include only purchasing devices listed by a nationally recognized testing lab and not continuing to charge the battery once it’s full.
Additionally, SCPFD said to never use charging equipment that did not come with the device and to stop using the device if the battery shows signs of damage, such as unusual odors or changes in color.
