Orange County Sheriff John Mina said a man with schizophrenia was shot and killed by a deputy on Saturday.
Officers responded at around 3:30 p.m. to a home in Orlando after getting reports of a schizophrenic man behaving erratically in the street.
Mina said the man was reportedly not taking his medication.
When officers arrived, they were met by the man’s father, who said he was in the bedroom with a knife.
Mina said deputies tried to speak with the man for five minutes before he came out of the bedroom and “within one second” tried to stab one of the deputies on the scene. He then attempted to grab the deputy’s gun while swinging the knife again, the sheriff said.
At that point, the deputy shot the man several times. Deputies rendered aid on the scene before the man was transported to the hospital, where he died of his injuries, Mina said.
The deputy who shot the man suffered lacerations to his head and was also taken to the hospital, and is in good condition.
In keeping with the protocol for officer-involved shootings, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the incident. Following their investigation, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office while conduct an internal investigation.
The deputy has been placed on temporary, paid administrative leave pending the results of the investigation.
Mina said they have body camera footage of the shooting that will be released within 30 days.
