Sheriff: 24-year-old Lakeland man killed after driving off the roadway, crashing into metal power pole

A 24-year-old Lakeland man was killed after deputies said he drove off the roadway and crashed into a metal power pole.

The collision happened just before 2 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Pipkin Road and Old Medulla Road, just south of Lakeland. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said the man, who was driving a 2018 Ford F-150 pickup truck, did not seem to be wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Crews from Polk County Fire Rescue transported the man to a local hospital where officials said he died from his injuries.

The intersection was shut down for about four hours following the crash, but it has since reopened. An investigation is ongoing.
