Sheriff: Cars set on fire at auto dealership in Indiantown

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office is hoping to find whoever set cars on fire at a dealership on the Treasure Coast.

The sheriff’s office is working to figure out who set three cars on fire at an auto dealership in Indiantown early Sunday morning.

When the responding deputies arrived on the scene, body camera footage shows that their main concern was making sure everyone was safe.

“Fires always present unique challenges for first responders, especially law enforcement, because we don’t have the air packs. We have to make sure there’s no victims,” said Martin County Sheriff William Snyder. “There’s always the danger of the smoke, a lot of materials today have toxic materials, maybe an explosion … I always admire my deputies who put their own safety secondary and check for possible victims.”

Deputies confirmed no one was hurt, and when Martin County Fire Rescue arrived to Yoa’z Tire and Auto on Southwest Warfield Boulevard, crews put the fire out before the flames were able to threaten any nearby structures.

Snyder says it looks like there is a strong chance this was arson.

“It does appear to us from the onset that this was intentionally set. There were three vehicles with space between them,” said Snyder.

Investigators say they have a lead.

“We have some rough video, and we think we have some good leads, but we’re working with the community. Hopefully, somebody may have seen something or heard something,” said Snyder.

The incident report states that between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. Sunday, surveillance video shows a suspicious man on the property when the fire was happening. Detectives later dusted some areas for fingerprints.

A man who deputies say matches the description of the man on video was later questioned, but as of now, no one has been charged.

“Our request to the community is if you have heard something or somebody talking about it, or 2 a.m. Sunday morning going into Monday you saw something, please give us a call,” said Snyder.

The owner of Yoa’z Tire and Auto does not have a comment. The state fire marshal is assisting in the investigation.
