In a heroic start to the holiday, St. Lucie County Fire District (SLCFD) responded to a structure fire rescuing three dogs and a turtle.
At 8:33 a.m., several units responded to a call for a residential fire near 13th and Boston Ave., in Fort Pierce.
Upon arrival, crews faced heavy smoke and fire in the back of a four-unit structure, according to a post by the SLCFD.
In a Christmas miracle, the firefighters rescued all the dogs and the little turtle from the fire, ensuring everyone escaped unharmed as the blaze was extinguished.
St Lucie County Fire District Station 15 Lieutenant A H and his team got the emergency call.
“We train for this every shift that we’re here. Our primary purpose is to respond on scene as quickly and efficiently and go into action,” H said. “We were able to stretch a line real quick and put the fire out as well as perform a primary search and we were able to locate several animals that we were able to retrieve back to their owners.”
According to SLCFD, the fire is under investigation, and the Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.
