St. Pete officer struck by suspected drunken driver, officials say

A suspect accused of driving drunk struck a St. Petersburg police officer early Saturday morning.

The police department said a driver ran a stop sign at 1st Avenue North and 23rd Street North and struck the officer in a marked cruiser, who was traveling through the intersection.

Both drivers were taken for evaluation with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials said the officer was treated and released with minor injuries.

The suspect was taken into custody and charged with DUI, according to police.
