State Road 56 reopens to traffic after gravel truck overturns in crash

State Road 56 reopened to traffic Monday afternoon after a semi-truck was hit by an SUV and spilled nearly 40 tons of gravel, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 11:10 a.m. Monday in the eastbound lanes just east of Interstate 75.

Troopers said the truck, driven by a 59-year-old man from Port Richey, was hit by an SUV driver who was changing lanes. The truck then overturned and spilled the gravel onto the highway.

The driver of the truck and SUV driver, a 78-year-old woman from Wesley Chapel, were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries. She has since been charged with an improper lane change, FHP said.

Drivers were able to get through the area again after 1 p.m.
